Fresh Indian Spices, Subscription Box
Develop a brand identity and box design for Malabar Origins— a subscription box service that ships its subscribers small quantities of fresh, premium, organic spices from Malabar, measured for consumption.
The Malabar is a region of India known for its high quality foods, including spices. Malabar Origins’ subscription box will typically send their subscribers 1oz or 2oz bags so that they can be used for cooking each month rather than sitting in a cupboard.
In the future, Malabar Origins may expand to other food products sourced from Malabar, such as coconut oil and may also launch a retail line, so branding should be expandable for retail markets.
Since spices are being freshly acquired from Malabar region of India, it’s important that the brand reflects this heritage as a point of difference. Indian influences should be cultivated carefully to maximize appeal to a broader market.

Strong logos embody a brand’s values and communicate with customers using a visual language. The descriptions below detail how this logo was crafted to meet the brand values and mission.
Unique and easily identifiable. Design for easy application and reproduction, even in single color or small spaces.
Special customization adds peaks to the tops of the ‘A’s to bring subtle, elegant hints of Indian influence. This allows the Malabar heritage to shine through, even in circumstances when only the wordmark is shown.
Logo is balanced, clean and friendly. Sans-serif font choice invokes modernity, friendliness and openness. Rounded edges of this font makes it feel slightly weathered and worn, inspiring ideas of history and standing through time.
Upon research, we were drawn to the beautiful, unique shapes created by traditional Indian spice boxes — particularly since Malabar Origins’ main product is fresh Indian spices.
While exploring these spice box shapes, we realized it was possible for the shapes to create a subtle monogram using the ‘M’ and ‘O’ initials from the name ‘Malabar Origins’.
This creates a unique logomark for Malabar Origins’ identity that is not only a monogram, but pulls influences from heritage and spice culture of India.
The Malabar origins color palette was inspired by colors from the Malabar region, including traditional spice markets and the coastal landscape. The unique pattern uses a tessellated version of the logo to create a graphic that resembles a Indian spice box.
Inspired by henna designs and Indian fabrics, this logomark is used as a stand-alone element for rich, dramatic flair in designs and packaging.
The idea for this box design was to have an outside that is inviting, friendly and fresh. When opened, the inside of the box is vibrant, rich and bursting with color that reflects delicious spices. Designs from ornate logo make the box unique and shows its Indian heritage, but is restrained to ensure visibility of logo on 3 sides.
